Spitalfields – London’s oldest market – dates back to the thirteenth century and has been in its current location (at the edge of London’s financial centre) since 1666.
At the end of 2005, the market boasted a refreshed image with the majority of area’s old architectural features sensitively reworked within a modern glass and steel development that’s created an elegant enlarged space for the dozens of traditional market stalls, as well as retail shops, restaurants and cafes.
Market stall sell products ranging from vintage-style baby clothing, retro posters and jewellery to gourmet foods, accessories and quality craft
There are also shops around the perimeter (and in the surrounding streets) including Wood ‘N’ Things – a children’s toy and novelty gift store, All Saints – an original Spitalfields’ brand of uber-hip clothing, and Montezuma’s – an innovative British chocolate shop.
If you’ve shopped until lunch or dinner is demanding due attention, you can opt for a selection of quality British restaurant chains – Giraffe and Canteen among them – at the market, or even treat yourselves to a meal at the award winning fine dining venue Galvin La Chapelle. Another gourmet ingredient favourite in the area is the gorgeously quaint organic fruit, veg and specialty deli, Verde’s, owned by author Jeanette Winterson and operated by London chef Harvey Cabaniss – perfect for stocking up for a picnic in a nearby park.
Our Favourite Bit Great in any weather – being protected by glass ceilings means a little rain need not stand in your way of a bit of bartering.
While You’re In The Area Take a walk down Brick Lane, visit the Museum of London or do more shopping at Leadenhall Market (more a glorious historic arcade than a traditional market).
Time To Allow Half a day – or the better part of a day if you plan to ‘make a meal’ of it!
