Designer details Doris and Don Fisher opened the first Gap store on Ocean Avenue, San Francisco in 1969. The reason was simple. Don couldn’t find a pair of jeans that fit. The store, stocked with Levi’s, records and tapes, transformed into a thriving, nearly $15 billion global business with more than 134,000 employees, and a permanent place in pop cultural history. Founders Doris and Don have been credited with inventing the specialty retail category, though they were equally known for their commitment to philanthropy and civic work. The first GapKids store opened in San Mateo, California, in 1986, a year before the opening of the first Gap store in London. Today, there are more than 3,100 Gap stores worldwide.
