Oh the magical beauty of Australia’s iconic Three Sisters, the three sandstone peaks that overlook the Jamison Valley in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Park. We had stopped at Eden Point Lookout (from which this photograph was taken) just as the sun was setting and the beautiful trifecta aglow. Three-year-old Oliver was immediately smitten and determined we should sleep here, but we persuaded him that perhaps a walk to the lower lookout would be an acceptable compromise. I was more than a little sceptical about allowing our little live wire – who is going through a particularly independent and ‘testing the boundaries’ phase – to walk the mere 50 metres or so… after all, it is something like a 1,000 metre drop to the valley floor below (albeit, one that is broken by steep walking trails here and there on most sides). But as we watched the sun’s glow fade and the blue of these valley ranges become ever more poetic, it was evident that we had just observed our robot-, alien- and spaceship-mad boy discover a new and astonishing passion – one for the equally mysterious, incredible and awe-inspiring natural world. Now we just need to find the most child-friendly trails to take him on his first big trek…
