Just arrived in Sydney, there is of course nothing else for it but to visit Bondi Beach… well actually, there are plenty of other options, but with a Festival of the Winds beckoning, it wasn’t too hard to opt for some sun, sand, surf and surreal spring sailing in the skies. So it was that we made our way down the peak-hour-style traffic jammed Bondi Road, past cool-school hangout Bondi Icebergs, slowly winding our way to this famous stretch of southern sand, when Oliver excitedly exclaimed, “I see a whale…” Casually informing him that he couldn’t possibly be seeing a whale just yet – we couldn’t even see the ocean – we nonetheless peered out windows to discover not one but five whales casually floating in the sky, surrounded by a flotilla of little fish, dragons, sharks, squids, flowers and countless other unidentifiable flying objects.
With a host of activities for families – kite making workshops, dancing classes, leaping castles, musicians, circus acts, not to mention kites from across the globe – I’d imagined us simply sitting on the sand, watching the colourful characters scarper through the air. But this idyll was soon hijacked by a three- and six-year-old who couldn’t resist a September ‘catch me if you can’ game with the waves, which promptly turned into a full-blown ‘fall-over-and-tumble-about-entirely-clothed’ joyful mission to be at one with the sea. Thankfully, Gran had packed towels, despite my protests that we wouldn’t be swimming (mother always knows best, right! – I’m still in training for that kudos), and after a little more kite-sight-seeing we were all packed back in the car, homeward bound.
